Music Club with Tony Steve! June 28th!

Our next Music Club is June 28th in the Main Library Auditorium and it starts at 4pm. Remember the class is geared to children ages 8-12, but we welcome children ages 6-14.

Our very special guest for this program is Tony Steve! He'll be using our big movie screen to show some silent film shorts as he produces a live soundtrack with percussion instruments. He'll be talking to the children about different percussion instruments, and how they create different moods in cinema.
Tony Steve is a professor of percussion and composition at Jacksonville University. He has performed with the Jacksonville Symphony (member 13 years), Israeli Festival Orchestra, Glimmerglass Opera Orchestra, Hartford Symphony, North Eastern Pennsylvania Symphony, Greenwich Symphony, and Bridgeport Symphony as a percussionist.
He has toured with “A Chorus Line” in Europe, appeared in Korea as marimba soloist with the Brooklyn Percussion Ensemble, and performed as percussionist at Madison Square Garden for “A Christmas Carol”. In addition, he has worked with Henry Mancini, Lou Rawls, Sheri Lewis and The Xaiver Cugat Orchestra. Professor Steve has also won numerous ASCAP writers awards and his music is performed in America as well as Europe and Asia.

We're very excited to have such a unique and amazing performer for our next installment of Music Club!

You can listen some of Professor Steve's own compositions here. And here is a .pdf of our flier.

And here's a small sample of some of the film he'll be providing a soundtrack for...

See you June 28th!

Music Club!

Our first Music Club program was amazing.  Von Barlow and his band playing a few songs for the kids and mixed things up with plenty of discussion about what instruments they played and how the instruments worked. He even got all the kids on stage to play his new drum invention the clix sticks.

Check out a video of the band playing at the library here.

A big thanks to Von Barlow and his band for coming to our debut Music Club program!

Music Club with Von Barlow's Jazz Journey!

We are starting a library program in June simply called Music Club.  It will be held every other Tuesday at 4pm and geared towards children 8-12, although any child 6-14 may attend.  We’ll explore different types of music, and learn about particular artists / composers, instruments and theory.

We're already getting musicians and performers for the classes! They’ll be talking about their personal history as a musician, what sort of places they play and record, going into depth about the instrument they play, is it the main source of income for them.. etc. The class is an hour long, and while they certainly don’t have to take up that entire time slot, they are being given free rein to do so. And hopefully at the end of class we can break the kids up into groups and have them go to instrument stations – getting to hold and play some of the instruments.
Our Music Club kicks off June 14th at 4pm with Von Barlow's Jazz Journey! He's played with Ray Charles, Etta James, Harry Connick Jr  and Bunky Green  (...just to name a few) and he'll be coming to play with his band and talk with kids at the Main Library in the auditorium.

If you have any questions, give us a call at 630-2417.

Thanks!
-Josh

PS. For our second installment (June 28th) we'll be having Tony Steve, a Jacksonville University professor of world and contemporary music, with a specialization in percussion. He'll be sharing with us how percussion instruments can be used for soundtracks for silent films.(!!!)

Thank you Trad's Garden Center!

The Main Library Children's Department wishes to express a formal thank you to Trad's Garden Center for coming out last month to teach our young patrons about Butterfly Gardening!  This is the third year in a row that Trad's has donated their time and their plants to our library community.  We appreciate such generosity and hope our patrons get a chance to stop by Trad's Garden Center to see their new children's area!
