Music Club with Von Barlow's Jazz Journey!

We are starting a library program in June simply called Music Club.  It will be held every other Tuesday at 4pm and geared towards children 8-12, although any child 6-14 may attend.  We’ll explore different types of music, and learn about particular artists / composers, instruments and theory.

We're already getting musicians and performers for the classes! They’ll be talking about their personal history as a musician, what sort of places they play and record, going into depth about the instrument they play, is it the main source of income for them.. etc. The class is an hour long, and while they certainly don’t have to take up that entire time slot, they are being given free rein to do so. And hopefully at the end of class we can break the kids up into groups and have them go to instrument stations – getting to hold and play some of the instruments.
Our Music Club kicks off June 14th at 4pm with Von Barlow's Jazz Journey! He's played with Ray Charles, Etta James, Harry Connick Jr  and Bunky Green  (...just to name a few) and he'll be coming to play with his band and talk with kids at the Main Library in the auditorium.

If you have any questions, give us a call at 630-2417.

Thanks!
-Josh

PS. For our second installment (June 28th) we'll be having Tony Steve, a Jacksonville University professor of world and contemporary music, with a specialization in percussion. He'll be sharing with us how percussion instruments can be used for soundtracks for silent films.(!!!)

Thank you Trad's Garden Center!

The Main Library Children's Department wishes to express a formal thank you to Trad's Garden Center for coming out last month to teach our young patrons about Butterfly Gardening!  This is the third year in a row that Trad's has donated their time and their plants to our library community.  We appreciate such generosity and hope our patrons get a chance to stop by Trad's Garden Center to see their new children's area!

Library Advocacy

We've heard from a lot of you that you are concerned about the proposed budget cuts at city and state level and how this will impact the service and materials at your library.

We know you want to help- and here's how. Let the decision makers know what is important to you. Advocate for us- and for the services that make up your library experience. Click on the banner above or go to: http://ilovejpl.com/ to get more information about the possible cuts, how this will affect us (and you!) and who to contact.
