Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Remember Monday, January 20th, is Martin Luther King Jr Day.

All Jacksonville Public Libraries will be closed in observation.

We will reopen on Tuesday at 11 am.

Make sure to check out some of the books about this inspiring man and learn more about the civil rights movement.

The book shown includes text from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous speech set against beautiful paintings by Kadir Nelson. It helps to bring alive the content of the speech for a new generation. It includes a CD of the original speech.

Rain Storytime

It had been raining all week and then when it was time to do a rain storytime, it was sunny! So, we did a lot of pretending and making our own rain sounds by patting our knees and clapping (for thunder!)

Open Shut Them
Open shut them, Open shut them,
Give a little clap clap clap!
Open shut them, Open shut them,
Put them in your lap, lap, lap!
Creep them, crawl them,
Creep them, crawl them,
Right up to your chin, chin, chin!
Open wide your little mouth,
But do not let them in!

Falling, falling, falling, falling
Almost to the ground, ground, ground
Slowly pick them up again and turn them round and round, round, round.
Faster, faster, faster, faster,
Faster, faster, clap, clap, clap
Slower, slower, slower, slower,
Put them in your lap, lap, lap

Open shut them, Open shut them,
Give a little clap clap clap!
If ready for storytime, ready for storytime,
Put them in your lap, lap, lap

Rain
Rain on the green grass
(flutter fingers down to ground)
Rain on the tree
(sign for tree)
Rain on the rooftop
(form hands over head as roof)
But not on me! (point to self)

Split! Splat! by Amy Gibson
This was a short, easy start to our storytime and all of the kids seemed to enjoy it.

Ants Go Marching
The ants go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah
The ants go marching one by one, the little one stops to suck his thumb
And they all go marching down to the ground to get out of the rain, BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
… two, tie shoe
…three, climb tree
.. four, shut the door
…five, take a dive

If you’re happy and you know it
If you’re happy and you know it, give a shake
If you’re happy and you know it, give a shake.
If you’re happy and you know it then your face will surely show it.
If you’re happy and you know it, give a shake.
tap your knees
…touch your toes
…beep your nose
… do all four

  The itsy-bitsy spider
The itsy-bitsy spider
Climbed up the water spout
Down came the rain
And washed the spider out
Out came the sun
And dried up all the rain
And the itsy-bitsy spider
Climbed up the spout again

One Rainy Day by Valeri Gorbachev
I did this story as a very modified puppet play (many animals not actually in the story took refuge under the tree) but it was a hit.

 Five Umbrellas
Five umbrellas stood by the back door,
The red one went outside, then there were four.
Four umbrellas stood pretty as can be,
… blue,  then there were three.
Three umbrellas stood with nothing
to do,
… green, then there was two.
Two umbrellas stood watching for the sun,
… yellow, then there was one
Just one umbrella stood alone in the hall,
… white, and that was all!

Shake my sillies out
I’m gonna shake, shake, shake my sillies out.
Shake, shake, shake my sillies out.
Shake, shake, shake my sillies out.
And wiggle my waggles away.
(Repeat with clap my crazies out, jump my jiggles out,  yawn my sleepies out,  stretch my stretchies out, and shake my sillies out.)

Red Rubber Boot Day by Mary Lyn Ray
Before I read this book, we discussed what kids like to do on a rainy day and what they wear when they go outside in the rain.

Singing in the Rain
Singing in the rain.
Just singing in the rain.
What a glorious feeling,
I’m happy again….
Hands up (leader says)
Hands up (children repeat)
Singing in the rain.
Just singing in the rain.
What a glorious feeling,
I’m happy again….
… Hands up/ Knees bent/ Bottoms out/ Chin up/ Tongue out/ Turn around/ SIT DOWN!

Goodbye Song
(tune: She’ll be coming around the mountain)
Now it's time to say goodbye to all our friends, "Goodbye!"
Now it's time to say goodbye to all our friends, "Goodbye!"
Now it's time to say goodbye,
Wave your hands,
Wink your eye,
Now it's time to say goodbye to all our friends, "Goodbye!"
