Early Literacy Programming


Stories for Babies (Friday and Saturday at 10:15 AM)
A short lap-sit program for children from birth to walking with an adult caregiver.  The program includes rhymes, songs, fingerplays, and books to promote language development and positive interactions between parent and child.  

Toddler Music and Movement  (Wednesday at 11:30 AM)
This program is for children walking to 36 months with an adult caregiver.  This program includes songs, stories, and instruments that promote basic musical concepts and terminology while incorporating pre-literacy skills for reading and writing. 

Toddler Art (Wednesday at 11:15 AM, Friday and Saturday at 10:30 AM)
This program is for children 18 – 36 months with a caregiver. Children engage in developmentally appropriate art activities that promote writing by developing the fine motor muscles in the hands.  Activities focus on building strength, coordination, cause/effect, and experimenting with different art implements.

Stories for Young Children (Friday and Saturday at 11:00 AM)
This program is for children birth to 5 years with an adult caregiver.  The program includes stories, fingerplays, nursery rhymes, and songs that promote language development, vocabulary building, and comprehension.  

Family Art (Friday and Saturday at 11:30 AM)
This program is open to children up to age 12 and their families. Participants are introduced to art activities and techniques that promote cooperation and creative expression.




School Age Programming

The Jacksonville Public Library offers a variety of school age programs. These programs share or build upon library resources and promote reading and learning for children in Kindergarten through 5th grade.


Art Club (Thursdays at 3:00 PM)
Participants are introduced to art history, activities and techniques than promote creative expression and creative thinking. This program is intended for children in 3rd through 5th grade. 

Dramarama  (Thursdays at 4:00 PM)
Explore improve, drama games, and techniques that promote creative expression and creative thinking.This program is intended for children in 3rd through 5th grade. 

Guitar Lessons 
Join us for a series of 6 basic guitar lessons. Register for the next class by calling the children's department at (904)630-2420. This program is intended for children in 3rd through 5th grade. 

People in Your Neighborhood 
 Meet a local expert and explore your world! This program is intended for children in Kindergarten through 5th grade. 

Puppet Making
Join us and learn to make a different type of puppet each week. This program is open to children in Kindergarten through 5th grade.

Science Saturdays
These programs engage children in an exploration of their physical world through hands-on experimentation. Activities encourage use of the scientific method and careful observation. Projects build upon library resources and introduce foundational concepts of science and experimentation. This program is intended for children in Kindergarten through 5th grade.
